Assessing the potential effects of a mastery-based mathematics program on exam performance in an undergraduate psychology statistics course

This study examines the potential effects of a mathematics computer-program on weekly exam performance in two sections of an undergraduate statistics course. The math tutorial presents foundation material (basic mathematics, order of operations) that is required for mastery of more complex statistical procedures. The introduction of the tutorial program was staggered across courses; one group completed the tutorial during week 2, the other during week 5. Results suggest that demonstrating competence via the tutorial in basic mathematics skills and order of operations does not produce salient improvements in exam performance. Rather, student failure may be contingent on additional contingencies not targeted by the present study. Future research should examine the effects of these ancillary contingencies on the variability and overall performance of students, generalization from component to composite responses, and the potential remediation of test related anxiety.
