
Project-based Learning and Problem-based Learning in the Multimedia Design Course for Improving Critical Thinking Performance

Abstract
In the 21st century, more emphasis is put on the importance of cultivating the critical thinking skills of students. However, university students do not usually show good critical thinking (CT) performance. In order to help undergraduate students improve their critical thinking performance, project-based learning and problem-based learning (PBL) were used in multimedia design course. Accordingly, this study developed a PBL activity to cultivate university students’ CT skills. Eighty students participated in this study. Both quantitative and qualitative data were collected and analyzed. A questionnaire was used to test the CT skills and CT disposition of students in the pre-test and post-test. Then, mutual assessment was applied to track the students’ perception and feelings during the 16-week instruction and class. Findings of the test and assessment suggest that PBL can effectively enhance their CT skills. Notably, there are some special strategies in applying PBL in the multimedia design course. These findings can make a contribution to the cultivation of undergraduate students’ CT skills.
