Abstract

Developing an online course requires a sensible and sensitive approach to choosing suitable instructional and communication media. With new technology constantly emerging, evaluating and selecting appropriate tools for use in an online course requires consideration of five critical factors: Who will use the tool? What learning strategy and expected outcome does it support? When will it be most useful? Where should it be in the course? Why use this tool and not another? This poster session presents examples from actual online and hybrid courses to demonstrate that selection process and the resulting implementation of wikis, journals, web conferencing, discussions, instructor-created videos, video drop-boxes for student-created videos, and other technology to achieve learning objectives.
