Abstract
Abstract: The present paper investigated the effects of WBT (web-based training) use on EFL (English as a Foreign Language) learners in Japan, where they have few opportunities to be exposed to the target language in daily life. The ten-week intervention was conducted, comparing the shadowing task approach (SH approach) in a classroom with WBT available with the same approach in a regular classroom without WBT. The former showed significant improvements in reading and “listening perception (defined below)” test scores. The approach using a WBT environment might help lower-level EFL learners to have good access to target language pronunciation as well as language use, with its scaffolding effects resulting in improvements in “listening perception”, one of the bottom-up processing skills. Based on this result, we have been developing a waveform viewer using digital tablet to enhance the scaffolding effects for EFL learners’ aural-oral skill development.
