Smartphones in the Classroom: Are We Ready?

The use of mobile phones - both smartphones and feature phones - is ubiquitous among K-12 and higher education students. Undoubtedly this mobile device is one of the next primary platforms for instruction. There currently are many efforts to discover the best ways to harness the power of this communication device as a tool to enhance instruction. This paper 1) reviews current research in the use of smartphones in educational settings, 2) offers many examples of promising tools for instructional use, and 3) describes guidelines and ideas for making the transition from purely computer-based to mobile-enabled instruction.
