Elementary Teacher Candidates’ Perception of Integration of Online Activities in Traditional Classes ARTICLE

Abstract

This study explored the role of the incorporation of web-based activities in augmenting student engagement and interaction in a traditional course. Data were collected in two semesters from four classes of students who took the course, using survey and selected interview as instruments. About 75 students responded to the survey and 20 of them participated in the interview. The study found that a majority of the students held positive views of these learning experiences: student-centered flexible learning environment, student-student interactions, and the connections between Web-based activities and face-to-face (FTF) learning. These findings suggested that integration of online activities into traditional teacher education courses can shift some of the power, authority, and control from the instructor to the learner while providing the interaction and connection that are central and valuable to traditional classrooms.
