Abstract

This report summarizes key findings relating to an institutional study of web-conference based learning and teaching at Macquarie University. Academics from a range of disciplines trialed a web-conferencing system during Semester 1 of 2009. Feedback from participants indicated general satisfaction with the system, though a variety of technical problems were experienced ranging from users’ ability to operate the platform to the perceived reliability of the system. Several academics identified the need for web-conferencing to enable effective synchronous pedagogies for distance teaching and learning. A range of issues relating to the use of web-conferencing are articulated as well as strategies for effective implementation. It is intended that the results this study provide a point of comparison for other institutions that may be experimenting with web-conferencing as well as a framework for evaluation.
