Abstract

The increased flexibility built into many contemporary software applications provides teachers with far greater control over the educational user interface they provide for students. At the same time there has been an increasing emphasis upon more interactive and collaborative approaches to using learning technologies. This paper distills and synthesizes research drawn from the cognitive sciences, multimedia learning, distributed learning and previous Human Computer Interaction (HCI) research to derive an integrated approach for educational user interface design. A demonstration of the approach is provided in the context of redesigning a web-conferencing interface. Results derived from implementing a student evaluation instrument provide a measure of validity.
