Abstract
The social networking tools and practices that characterise the Web 2.0 environment have impacted significantly on the scholarly activities of university students and faculty. The academic library has an important part to play in supporting these endeavours. This paper gives an overview of a programme developed to encourage library staff to actively implement social networking tools in their everday work, and discusses an ongoing collaborative project between the University of Pretoria Library and the Department of Information Science, which was initiated with the aim of encouraging and motivating library reference staff to embrace the idea of implementing social networking tools typical of Web 2.0 / Library 2.0 in their daily interaction with students and academic staff at the university. By successfully addressing the needs of students and faculty the library is, and will be in future, an active partner in building and supporting social scholarship at the university.
