Abstract

Working with a PBS affiliate, this project engaged students and teachers at four high schools in the US and one each in China and Australia to use digital video tools in conjunction with the Ken Burns documentary The War. Extensive professional development was provided along with on-site support for most of the participants. A social network was used to support the project, and students and faculty were offered to opportunity to share their work in a collaborative and supportive online environment. While viewed as on ongoing project, some interesting issues were raised. These include asynchronous vs. synchronous collaboration; faculty/administrator support for and comfort with participatory culture engagement; global vs. national perspectives on a historical event; and, a minimalist approach to successful technology implementation. Lessons leaned that could benefit similar projects will be offered.
