Information Literacy from a Distance: Academic Librarian Outreach to Teacher Education Students in Distance Learning Programs

While having convenient, instant access to electronic library resources enhances research in academia, a level of self-direction is required which creates a need for librarian outreach. As more institutions add web-based courses and degrees, it is essential that librarians are involved in ensuring that participating students have the same library resources and services as those who are on campus for the ultimate goal of information literacy. In order to achieve this, librarians at institutions offering distance learning programs must expand their current outreach activities to distance learning faculty, students, and staff. Technology methods typically used in distance learning courses by librarians have both benefits and challenges. This paper will discuss methods of librarian outreach in distance learning, the new GeorgiaOnMyLine distance learning program and the author’s emerging involvement, and the author’s plans to research Teacher Education distance learning programs in the United States and GeorgiaOnMyLine Teacher Education faculty and students.
