Abstract

This study investigated middle school students' learning of project design skills and sought to understand what needed to be considered as students worked as multimedia designers. Both quantitative (project design questionnaire, concept mapping, design task ranking) and qualitative data (open-ended questions and interviews) were collected. The result indicated that students significantly increased their awareness of audience and presentation skill. Students also recognized the importance of planning, collaboration and research. However, there were great individual differences for planning and varied group dynamics for collaboration. Students also did not value evaluation skill due to lack of emphasis during the implementation. The study has implications for classroom implementation: first, allowing students options to plan their projects; second, providing collaboration instruction and incentives to promote successful collaboration; and third, placing more emphasis on the evaluation and revision tasks and setting time aside for these activities.
