Abstract

The integration of instructional technology into K-12 curricula is part of the North Carolina Standard Course of Study. In preparing future teachers, each candidate at NCCU must take a computer utilization course. This becomes a challenge for students who cannot attend face-to-face classes on a regular basis. To maintain the integrity of the course and support these novice users, it was essential to have added features to our traditional learning management system. Elluminate, a desktop videoconferencing solution, was used to provide additional instruction along with Blackboard, our learning management system. The videoconferencing sessions were used for: direct instruction, exploring new software, small group discussion, and special help. When comparing this course with a non-facilitated course, the author noted that students preferred the facilitated course with opportunities to converse with both the instructor and classmates.
