Abstract

The goal of inquiry-based learning (IBL) is to actively engage students in their learning. The STEM Outreach Center offered a Zombie Apocalypse online summer camp in 2021 for students who could not join the camp in-person. A curriculum was created and implemented in one-week summer camps for middle school students. The 5-E model of inquiry-instruction which focuses on the five phases of engagement, exploration, explanation, elaboration, and evaluation was used to create the curriculum. Professional development sessions were provided for teachers focusing on the curriculum basics, technological training for online teaching along with strategies and resources for student engagement. Preliminary feedback from the teachers and students shows a high level of engagement. This paper specifically discusses how inquiry-based learning was implemented in the online environment.
