Abstract

This paper is focused on how to integrate automatic speech recognition (ASR) technology into on-line pronunciation training system. The project was supported by the National Science Council of Taiwan to fulfill the strong demands for English learning in Taiwan. The automatic speech recognition technology that is suitable for the evaluation and diagnosis of non-native English was investigated and an on-line pronunciation training system was developed in this project. The system will provide the students an environment without stress to practice individually as often as they wish. Moreover, through the integration of ASR technology, the system can provide corrective feedback automatically and instantaneously. Unlike most recent computer aided pronunciation training (CAPT) systems that can not provide a meaningful and human-like feedback for the students, the system is designed for the specific accents of Taiwan's students and provides detailed diagnosis of the pronunciation errors instead of just a pure score.
