Abstract

The new curriculum guidelines enacted by MEXT in Japan have demonstrated the English Education Reform Plan, which includes the official introduction of compulsory English education at all elementary schools in 2020 We have been developing a digital picture book application targeting pre-school and lower elementary school children who are starting to learn English as a foreign language Our application runs on a web browser to realize children’s picture books: 1) run the picture and its sound for the story created by a child on the web browser; 2) play back the story in English; 3) switch between Japanese and English subtitles using the operation button; and 4) enable a child to create a new picture book just by choosing a background, characters, and utterances among ready-made options on the page Five pre-school and elementary school children tried this application for about three hours and they had no trouble using it They were able to use it intuitively and enjoyably
