This session shares how a course was designed to use an augmented reality app that takes advantage of the Internet of Things (IoT) to place students in the field. We will discuss how Project Outbreak was implemented in the microbiology curriculum, and how mobile devices have improved student learning. We believe that using one mobile app to generate data is just a start. The Internet connects almost everything. In our first few iterations we were able to geolocated videos, text and audio. We know that IoT can do more and our devices now connect us to our homes, cars and public places. As digital learners, our students will need to know how to use mobile devices and IoT in their workplaces. Our session presents one step into helping our students develop literacy with this type of technology connection. Using case study methodology, we look at the problem of student comprehension and engagement in a STEM course using mobile devices and the IoT to act as epidemiology investigators.
