Abstract

Remember coming to lecture with only a vague idea of what you’d be learning about for the next hour? Instead, hundreds of students in Cornell University’s Evolution and Diversity class arrived this semester fresh from exploring an online interactive full of real-life examples and self-quizzes on the topic of the day—How Do Fancy Traits Evolve In Nature? Quiz and survey results revealed that these students showed measurable learning gains and increased class engagement.

This best practices session focuses on the results of a partnership to develop multimedia modules as pre-class assignments in large lecture courses—and evaluate their effectiveness. A team of professors and instructional designers co-developed All About Fancy Males to address student misconceptions and increase engagement. The results affirm the potential for blended learning efforts like this one to improve upon the traditional model of lecture-based learning—and highlight how educational media can play a key role.
