Abstract

The goal of the presentation is to introduce a course being taught in English, as opposed to a course about English, that also utilizes computer technology in the form of an LMS (Learning Management System). Hokusei Junior College's English Department has a long-established selection of content-based courses as a key component of its curriculum. These range from Anthropology to Life Science and World Music. The concept behind the content-based courses is similar to that of the CLIL (content and language integrated learning) approach within the European Union's executive body, the European Commission (EC) and its Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). In Hokusei's case, the teaching style is not prescribed per se and each instructor has relative freedom in determining course content and delivery. The course in question attempts to integrate concepts of constructivist methodology as well as technology.
