Abstract

The community of inquiry (CoI) framework has been widely used to guide the research and practice of online and blended learning experience. This paper describes how the CoI framework was applied to design a technology-rich online course and how the framework was used as a lens to examine students' online learning experience. The preliminary findings showed that students were mostly satisfied with the quality of dialog, interaction, and the instructor, supporting the CoI as an effective framework to guide the design and delivery of online learning. Further studies are recommended to examine the utilization and impact of technology on social, teaching, and cognitive presences, and to investigate the nature and changes of student perceptions of the elements over time.
