A New Structured Approach to Alleviate Disorientation in a Hypermedia Environment

One of the current problems with hypermedia systems is the difficulty to determine where a particular segment of information is located in relation to the overall application structure.This phenomenon is called "disorientation" Disorientation is attributed to the failure to have an adequate and complete mental model of the logical structure of information in the application. This research proposal will introduce a new visually-based navigational approach to help eleviate disorientation.The architecture of a new Visually-Based Builder and Navigator tool will be developed and implemented in a hypermedia application to test the effectiveness and usefulness of such approach.The main focus of this tool is to provide designers with visually-based authoring environment and to generate automatically the internal representations of the hypermedia structure.The tool will be created to allow designers to stay oriented with regard to the logical structure of the application as it develops.
