Abstract

Teaching a course online means more than just placing a syllabus on a server. Online delivery involves extensive planning and attention to details that often go overlooked in typical classroom settings. Challenges for first-generation instructors include how to convert instructional materials to an online format, use advanced multimedia tools, and integrate technology resources into course content. This paper describes a five-stage professional development model to enable first-generation online educators to develop and implement hybrid or online courses. The stages of the model are: Planning, Instruction, Implementation, Refinement and Evaluation. Currently, 16 faculty members from two-year colleges in Louisiana are participating in this year-long project. Results indicate that participants are benefiting from structured training opportunities, support and mentoring from trainers and peers and are becoming more confident and competent online educators.
