Abstract

During the late 1990s, The Franklin Institute Science Museum recognized a synergistic opportunity within the science education reform culture. School districts were beginning to use research-based science activity kits as the cornerstone of their K-8 science curricula. Federal programs were urging and enabling schools to establish connections to the Internet. The presence of kits and the Internet in classrooms represented a new infrastructure for inquiry science. The Institute created the Keystone Science Network (KSN) to encourage inquiry-based science teaching through the use of science activity kits supported by online resources. The Network's website, Keystone Online, offers standards-based resources for K-8 science teachers everywhere. The project's evaluation found that KSN professional development events, combined with web-based curricular companions, were strong supports to teachers at all stages of their learning about a standards-based approach to science instruction.
