Abstract

This paper describes the development of InterLearn, an online teaching and learning tool, at Monash University, Australia. The rationale underpinning the development of the system is examined and examples of how it is used across different faculties are discussed. Also discussed are the preliminary findings from an investigation into the use of the system from teacher and student perspectives. The question of whether a top-down, one size fits all approach to online teacher and learning in higher education is appropriate when in fact different learning and knowledge communities exist across the university, is raised. It is suggested that further investigation is needed in order to determine how online teaching and learning technologies may be better employed and developed to support the learning cultures of individual faculties.
