Abstract
One-to-one laptop programs have become increasingly prevalent in schools. This paper shares an authentic learning framework for effective integration of one-to-one laptops that has been designed for the English School Foundation (ESF) school cluster in Hong Kong. The recommendations are based on a synthesis of academic literature and commentary, and informed by a study of parent, teacher and student perceptions of one-to-one laptop integration. Authentic learning principles are used to promote student motivation and achievement. Professional development is identified as crucial to support teachers implementing authentic learning strategies in a one-to-one laptop environment. This research indicates that teachers’ beliefs and computer proficiency have a major impact on the success of a one-to-one laptop initiative.
