Abstract
Abstract: Since the 1990s there has been a trend to explore the educational value of virtual reality (VR) environments such as Second Life and Active world. Three-dimensional (3D) virtual reality is now being used by foreign language teachers to create an authentic and real learning opportunities for their students (Second Life in Education, 2009). Can the virtual environment be a revolutionary force for foreign language learning? This study aims to probe into the potentials of VR for foreign language teaching and learning, as well as the factors that impact the learners’ language performance. Description and the results from the research study that involve students learning English as a foreign language through a popular learner-generated 3D environment called Second Life (SL) will be presented. Participants from a Northwest university in China will participate in a three-week long English learning section in SL.
