Abstract
The paper discusses the important role that electronic communication can take in relation to learning and teaching. In particular it discusses the role that asynchronous text-based conferencing can play. Staff support and participation is vital for the success of this approach, therefore it is important to understand the needs of academic staff in relation to using these techniques. This paper reports on academic staff attitudes towards and experiences of using e learning dialogue. Empirical evidence obtained from an initial questionnaire and subsequent interviews is presented. The results confirmed staff willingness to engage in e learning dialogue with students and their belief that it was beneficial to learning, though most effective when integrated into the learning activities of the module. The study also highlights a skills gap in both students ability to engage in e-learning dialogue and staff experience in facilitating this.
