Abstract

As an emerging filed, learning analytics is being used in various educational settings for educators to examine user data and to make instructional decisions. Learning analytics can help improve student performance through methods like adaptive learning and predictive modeling. This review of literature presented a systematic review on the empirical studies about adopting learning analytics in education from 2015 to present. A total of 26 peer-reviewed studies were included in this review and the discussion covered technologies involved, analytic techniques and data used, types of research designs, subject matter areas, and educational levels. The use of learning analytics in teaching and learning practices was also analyzed. It showed that the most common categories as emerged in these studies included predicting learning performances, detecting behaviors and learning patterns, and facilitating learning experiences. Findings from this review should provide useful information and insights to researchers interested in the topic and inform better educational practices.
