Abstract
A Bachelor of Education course “Assistive Technology: Access to Literacy” has been offered since 2012 at Acadia University in Nova Scotia Canada. Working from a sociocultural foundation of literacy practice the course engages pre-service teachers in the collaborative creation of curricular projects using a studio-learning model. The main aim of the course is to provide a reframing of the use of Assistive Technology as a potential inclusive pathway for “ new literacies” ( Lankshear & Knobel, 2011) rather than solely as a Special Education service. Drawing on two pre-service teacher cohort experiences, initial insights will be shared regarding the ways in which pre-service teachers are coming to understand the interplay of digital literacy practice, definitions of reading, Assistive Technology and accessibility.
