Abstract

This paper reviewed how social presence and cognitive engagement have been defined and explored in online learning environments in recent literature. The discussions on these two constructs are important and necessary in online learning, since they involve communicative and cognitive aspects that are critical for the success of online teaching and learning. The researcher proposed that future studies are needed to explore how these two constructs affect online learning outcome and whether the development of social presence can improve students' cognitive engagement in online learning environments.
