Abstract

This paper presents preliminary results of a survey conducted in the Spring of 2004 of practicing teachers in K-12 schools in Santa Clara County, California, also known as "Silicon Valley." The analysis is focused on six major factors related to computer use in the classroom: Gender, Years of Practice, Personal/Professional Background, Collegial Environment, Authentic Use of Technology, and Access to Staff Development and Technical Support. While further analysis is still required, it is argued that technology integration by teachers in their classrooms, even in technology-centric regions like Silicon Valley, is possibly not mainly determined by the individual teachers, but that other technology-related and contextual factors also play critical roles.
