Abstract

With more and more online courses offered from the universities in the United States, very often, two issues have caught the attentions from educators and researchers: (a) student identity verification, and (b) online assessment. The rules or criteria to the solutions of these two issues vary from institution to institution. This paper (at roundtable discussion) will introduce the authors’ experiences in a western state university. In the teacher education online courses they taught, they conducted web conferences to verify student identity through online assessment activities. The design, methods, preparations, and procedures of conducting such web conferences are presented. Online assessment activities and results are used to examine the consistency of students’ performances between their ongoing learning performance and the learning outcomes from the web conferences with the instructor. The consistency is then used as one criterion to confirm student identity.
