Abstract

Technology-assisted teaching is becoming the norm in today’s classrooms. Creating conditions to enhance learning requires teaching methods that take advantage of these new approaches. Aimed at both STEM educators and middle school students, the Cedar Creek Adventure utilizes the concepts of adventure, mystery and storytelling as a way to enhance learning. The Cedar Creek Adventure is a web-based learning environment where users interact with virtual ecological environments representing the ecosystems of the Cedar Creek Ecosystem Science Reserve. Virtual reality maps with learning hot spots bring the user deeper into the learning environment. It provides collaborative learning where students construct their own knowledge through a series of learning scenarios. Adventures are designed to bring "explorers" on a virtual scavenger hunt. The mysteries encourage "detectives" to solve science puzzles. And digital storytelling tools are provided for young users to create their own "eco-tales".
