‘Setting the Climate’: The Role of Instructional Design and Multimedia to Enhance Social Presence

Abstract
Informed by the Community of Inquiry (CoI) framework, this study explored the role of instructional design and multimedia in ‘setting the climate’ in an asynchronous online course. Using qualitative case study design, we described how multimedia can extend the capacity of Learning Management Systems (LMS) within which online course functions. Based on the preliminary data analysis, we concluded that multimedia is an effective catalyst for enhancing social presence. Additionally, multimedia based course activities should be integrated within course design throughout the course to foster a social community
