Abstract

This session will report a selected case of best practice of using social media in China to build ubiquitous lifelong learning communities. A popular science learning community in China, GuoKr will be explored to illustrate the engaging power of social media for informal public education. GuoKr has dozens of learning communities devoted to various subjects or shared interests. This session will examine the variety of Chinese social media and social networking sites integrated to build GuoKr learning communities. In particular, the session will focus on social media’s roles and impacts on collaborative community building and public knowledge construction. Content analyses and data mining results will be shared to demonstrate how GuoKr successfully attract and engage public in lifelong learning, especially on scientific topics. Practical and research implications will be discussed with suggestions for research on as well as practice of ubiquitous learning communities.
