In online learning environment, learning methods and instructor’s role have changed a lot. Online learner’s learning difficulty can be reduced by providing effective learning support. Online instructors play an important part in online learning support; therefore, the key question is how to improve their online instructing performance in order to facilitate learning. In this study, 1684 online learners in China’s Modern Distance Education project completed in a survey of learning difficulties and opinions to online learning support. It shows that learners’ personal characteristics are not the main cause of learning difficulties, but that online learning support, especially online instructor’s performance is the main cause of learning difficulties. Moreover, 50 online courses have been investigated to establish 50 Chinese instructors’ instructional performance. Some advice to improve instructors’ online instructing performance has also been put forward in the study, such as being active and humorous, providing non-academic support.
