Abstract

This is a research study that looks at how ICT technologies such as the use of handphones and podcasting can contribute to the teaching and learning of oral language in a primary school classroom.A podcasting programme was run in a year 4 class and the enhancement to oral language abilities recorded using a case study method. The podcasting programme entailed producing audio and video recordings for an authentic audience and purpose, engaging with feedback from peers,teachers and commenters on the podcasting page,and making revisions to the recording before presenting it to the world via Internet.It provided students with much larger and far ranging audience for their work than was available in their everyday lesson in the classroom.It also provided students with time to practice and reflect on their oral language performance.It was found that podcasting provided the vital middle ground between how to craft a message and presenting it to an audience.I maintain that the use of Podcasting creates ‘thinking communicators’ not just proficient speakers.
