Abstract

A great number of untrained people work as teachers and tutors of English as a second or foreign language (ESL/EFL) in community programs, social service agencies, commercial schools, public libraries, churches, homes, etc. This roundtable describes and demonstrates a minimalist, problem-based, connectivist approach to preparing such teachers to be more effective, professional, and successful. Because these individuals are not enrolled in traditional campus-based teacher education programs, reaching them is a challenge. Consequently, this approach utilizes a hybrid delivery system involving (1) traditional paper and Web-based text materials, (2) digital video clips, and (3) interactive Web-based exercises. This technology-based system allows for flexible, individualized, distance learning.
