Abstract

Assessment of student learning in an online course environment presents a unique challenge for test security, mainly because the instructor does not have the opportunity to be in the same location as the test taker. This paper proposes the use of Bloom's Taxonomy in identifying strategies that may meet the challenge of online assessment. It is suggested that assessing students' high levels of learning, such as comprehension and application, combined with certain features of an online course, provides a potential solution to online test security. It is also suggested that the traditional way to define test security that may fit the traditional classroom is no longer tenable in an online setting. Assessing students' higher levels of learning not only resolves the issue of test security, but also makes testing more authentic and valid, and provides motivation for students to take the test on their own.
