Abstract
To enhance student learning in first year physics au UNSW, a development project was put in place to integrate conceptual learning and practical applications, using online multimedia resources as a support framework. The project has a theoretical base in constructivist approaches to learning and teaching. Key concepts in physics are taught in a laboratory environment, integrated with active exploration of the application in experimental conditions. Students are prepared for learning in the 'exploratorial' sessions by preparatory work and learning is reinforced by follow-up activities that are online, using WebCT. Multimedia support is provided where necessary during the exploratorial sessions. The paper includes a literature review and evaluation data.
