Abstract

This proposal is focused on the use of multimedia: the printed word, Flash movies, video clips and an on-line quizzing tool: Perception, in the teaching and assessment of a novel classification device for Materials Science and Engineering, called "The River of Paradise". The taxonomic device aims for virtually 100% student competency in classifying materials into ceramics, polymers, metals, composites and various sub-classes. All of the multi-media devices are either deployed as of the time of writing (end of fall semester 2004), or will be deployed in the spring semester 2005. The full paper will report on the results of various assessment studies that will be completed in spring 2005, together with the results of several student surveys. This proposal contains details of both the learning objects, and the assessment protocols.
