Abstract

This paper describes the development and evaluation of Function to Refocus on Keywords (FReK), a collaborative brainstorming mind map system with a highlighting function to prompt participants to refocus on keywords that have not been discussed within the last 5 minutes. FReK has three functions: (1) creating idea nodes on a mind map, (2) creating and visualizing relationships among idea nodes as a network through discussion, and (3) highlighting inactive idea nodes, defined as those for which the user has not recently created new relationships. The evaluation revealed that the third function can facilitate users’ creation of new ideas and discussion with an awareness of the relationships among the keywords described on the mind map. FReK gave sufficient visibility to keywords that the participants did not talk about for a while. The design of FReK is effective to support users in generating creative new ideas related to the variety of ideas already described in the discussion.
