Abstract

Capacity building in higher education has intensified with rapidly increasing numbers of students and federal scrutiny of education outcomes. Colleges have turned to online education and Intelligent Tutoring Systems (ITSs) to provide greater access and individualized attention mainly to course curricula and, in some ways, academic support programs. This paper discusses the process and benefit of implementing online tutoring to a multi-campus college system and recommends the addition of ITS to tutoring center services as a comprehensive strategy for continued capacity building and for balancing the affective and cognitive needs of students, leading to greater academic engagement and achievement beyond the classroom.
