Abstract

The present study seeks to investigate the impact of new educational telecommunications in context of the theory of transactional distance. Through conducting a survey on perceptions of transactional distance among learners of two distance education technologies (correspondence study and Web-based instruction), the study attempted to identify in what ways Web-based distance course delivery influences transactional distance. The data were collected through a postal and an online survey of 400 undergraduate UK-based students, who were studying at the Open University. The paper discusses the differences in responses of the two groups of learners and indicates at the implications of the study for further research in the area.
