Designing a Mathematics-for-All MOOC

While online courses have been part of the educational landscape for a couple of decades, MOOCs offer two innovations. First, a MOOC is open, meaning that anyone with Internet access, and without having to meet any course prerequisites, can register and complete the course. Second, a MOOC is massive, meaning that there is no limit to the number of people who can take the same course. In this paper I discuss the design, development and implementation of a mathematics-for-all MOOC (M4A-MOOC), aimed for teachers, students and parents (available at www.mathclinic.com). The M4A-MOOC was developed in partnership with the Fields Institute for Research in Mathematical Sciences, using activities from classroom-based research and videos from classroom-based documentaries. I also discuss the advertising strategy being developed to promote the M4A-MOOC, given that it is not offered through a main MOOC portal, such as Coursera or Udacity.
