Abstract

Using available electronic databases, a literature review on the use of asynchronous computer-mediated communication (CMC) was conducted. Analysis of research-based designs measuring interaction in teacher education was conducted along three constructs: research designs, assessment measures, and findings. While the findings detailed in this literature review are inconclusive as to the overall effectiveness of the use of CMC to facilitate collaborative interactions in preservice teacher educators, they do point to learning gains when implemented appropriately in ways that address multiple factors of interaction. These findings have implications for the implementation of CMC in teacher education as well as for continued research in this arena.
