Abstract
The University of Alabama at Birmingham presents the Girls Engaged in Mathematics & Science (GEMS) Project to the 2009 SITE Conference. This paper outlines a cogent state and national partnership that will result in research on girls in mathematics and science courses using 21st Century professional development and resources to give girls, particularly those in rural underserved areas, digital media that inspires confidence and enjoyment of lifelong learning. The overarching goal of GEMS is to change attitudes, behavior, pedagogy, and curriculum for girls through providing a vibrant, engaging, digital portal program with media that extends learning beyond the traditional classroom. This innovative project promises to build a bridge between K-12 and informal learning environments through higher education pre-service education and research resulting in stronger collaborations, better communications and resources to encourage girls in mathematics and science endeavors and careers.
